Document Q, will come into effect on the 1st of October, and will feature the new government guidelines covering security of ‘easily accessible’ doors and windows in homes. The guidelines are to help builders and those in the construction industry meet new standards set out by the Building Regulations for England. They specifically focus on door hardware requirements, which will become more stringent.
The updates apply to doors and windows that provide access from the outside of a dwelling or communal area of a building into a home. These doors and windows must be able to resist attack by a casual or opportunist burglar by being both sufficiently robust and fitted with the correct door hardware.

Where do we come in?

Document Q highlights the new requirement that any door fitted after the 1st of October 2015 on the outside of a dwelling, or that provides access into a flat or apartment block, should have the correct door hardware.
Letter plates should not exceed a certain size and should try and prevent people from removing keys from inside the house. Main entry doors should have a door viewer so they can see who is calling and the same door should also have some kind of door chain and door guard.
