Kitemarked Cylinders
What is BSI Kitemark?
The British Standards Institution (BSI) Kitemark is a highly recognised quality mark that confirms that a product has been thoroughly tested and checked, and proven to meet a recognised industry standard or need. A product is awarded one of three levels:
- 1 star Kitemark
- 2 star Kitemark
- 3 star Kitemark
Unfortunately many of the door cylinders that are installed in homes all across the country are not Kitemarked, and a majority of these cylinders have not been tested to any standards or security tests! And what's more they are not protected against the most common burglary attacks, meaning they can be broken in to in a matter of seconds. Click here for more information.
The BSI Kitemark tests the cylinder for a number of different elements including:
- Safety
- Attack Resistance
- Key Related Security
- Durability
- Corrosion and Temperature Resistance
It is essential to make sure that the door cylinder fitted to you door is Kitemarked. You can tell this by seeing if it has the heart shaped BSI Kitemarked logo on it (see above.)
Kitemarked door cylinders can either be awarded 1 star or 3 stars:
1 Star Cylinders
1 star cylinders are the most common Kitemark cylinders you will come across. These cylinders have been rigously tested so that they offer protection against lock bumping, lock drilling and lock picking.
In order for a door manufacturer to meet requirements for a PAS24 security door, all the door security on the door must add up to a minimum of 3 stars. This means that 1 star cylinders must also be fitted with a 2 star security product, which could be a high security handle or an escutcheon. More information about this can be found by clicking here.
3 Star Cylinders
3 star cylinders have been tested to the same standards as 1 star cylinders, however they have also had additional testing for anti-snap security.
These 3 star cylinder are the highest security cylinders available, and do not need any additional hardware in order to meet PAS24 requirements.
