Split Spindle vs Single Spindle

Designed for comfort and ease of operation, the new UAP Split Spindle Pad front door handle features a pad-shaped external handle for an ergonomic fit. But what differences are there between this type of handle and standard uPVC door handles?

The main difference is that these handles prevent the door from being opened from the outside when closed. A key will be needed to open the door from the outside, but the door will still open from the inside without a key being used unless it’s deadlocked.

This type of handle therefore has some profound differences in lock functionality compared to the general type of uPVC handles found on most doors. The single spindle door handle can be inline and operate from both sides of the door. The UAP Split Spindle Handle is using two two offset spindles. Lever pad handles have offset handles operating independently from each other on opposite sides of the door using two offset spindles. The external pad handle does not allow the latch to be withdrawn or the door to be opened from outside without the use of a key. This would prevent unauthorised access from outside if you have not fully locked your door. An example of this would be if you have just closed but not locked the door when bringing in your shopping.

The UAP split spindle pad handle can be used on UPVC, timber or composite doors as long as the lock within the door is suitable. Lever/Pad handles are for split spindle locks, also known as split follower locks.

Lever pad handles cannot always be used in place of standard lever handles – it depends on the lock and door type. Lever pad handles can work with locks that have a single spindle, two offset spindles, or two inline spindles. If you don’t already have a split inline lock, then you won’t be able to change to this functionality, unless you have the second spindle hole needed. You would need to dismantle the lock case from the door and find the right offset handles.

UAP’s Split Spindle Pad door handle is not handed, meaning it can be used in a variety of applications, either way around on the door, and opened with a left or right hand comfortably. Remember to keep the screws on the inside and turn the lever around to the correct direction when installing them.

Our pad handles are made from hard-wearing aluminium and come with a 5 year coating guarantee and are available in black and white. They can be used on uPVC doors and timber and composite doors where the lock has a dual spindle, like our Fullex Crimebeater lock. Combine this handle with the Kinetica+ K4 3* Kitemarked euro cylinder for a 3* Kitemark status for PAS24 doors.
